Autumn Attunement
Tuesdays, 7:30-9:00pm
October 8, 15, 22, 29, November 5, 12, 19
at The Practice Space
The purpose of the bi-annual autumn and spring seven week series are to undergo the transformative effects of dedicated practice. To assist us within this process, we will gather as a community to share our experiences, learn from one another, and gain further insights into yoga philosophy. We will begin with where we are, but through these programs, we will be addressing all aspects of our being through dedicated practices and lifestyle refinements. Our efforts will provide us the opportunity to discover things about ourselves that are hidden beneath the surface of our conscious mind. When we can see ourselves with greater clarity, we can make lasting changes to support our growth and wellbeing.
The format of this program is intended to offer guidance and be a supportive foundation for establishing a daily commitment to yoga practice and self reflection to establish a greater sense of health and wellbeing. Each week, we will gather as a community for yoga philosophy, guidance, discussion, support, and encouragement for the journey ahead. The weekly community meetings will be discussion based. Although we will discuss details of practice, these meetings will not be a”yoga class.”
Guidance will be provided in our weekly meetings to establish a daily meditation and āsana practice on days when you cannot make it into the studio. You will be given weekly handouts accompanied by journaling questions for further contemplation and which will guide our weekly discussions.
THE PHILOSOPHICAL AND PRACTICAL FOCUS OF
DHARMA
KARMA
& THE YAMA-S
The Focus
Both the philosophical and practical focus of this program will be the topics of dharma, karma, and the yama-s. Succinctly, dharma can be considered as “that which sustains.” It is experienced as one’s sense of purpose and meaning. Karma literally translates to “action,” but from some perspectives, our actions determine our future and stem from our thoughts. As yoga can be characterized as a state free from suffering, clarifying our actions to live in accordance with our purpose alleviates our suffering. The ethical precepts (yama-s) of Patañjali’s Yogasūtra are considered to be the practices which support and clarify our mind to take right action aligned with our purpose and sustaining inner and outer harmony.
The spiritual and social health of this series is both the theory and application of practices which shift our tendency to operate from habitual survival reactivity into thoughtful responsiveness. This not only supports our own purpose, but becomes an affirmative contribution within every relationship that we engage with.
