Ground into your personal practice before becoming a teacher

The industry has made it very easy to become a teacher and, in the process, has watered down the efficacy of these practices. By blending learning and becoming a teacher, we bypass the wealth of being a student first.

This program emphasizes the EMBODIMENT OF YOGA rather than focusing on teaching methodologies.

This creates a foundation for students to authentically connect with yoga philosophy and its modern applications. Students will gain the confidence to guide others in casual settings while preparing for future teaching development. The course manual alongside the required texts will deepen the student’s understanding, laying the groundwork for further advanced studies in the 100-hour Teaching Essential Program.

An immersion into the philosophy, lifestyle and the rich history of yoga

We practice the embodiment of yoga without the pressure of immediately learning teaching methodology. This program provides an opportunity for students to establish a consistent daily practice and live a yoga lifestyle throughout the training.

Upon completion, graduates will be equipped to guide friends and family through yoga practices and share philosophical and historical insights in informal settings. Many new teachers often experience “imposter syndrome” when beginning to teach in formal studio settings.

Authentic teaching requires being firmly rooted in one's practice and teachings, grounded in both personal experience and applied study.

Unfortunately, in the early 2000s through the pandemic, the modern studio culture often churned out under-prepared and under-qualified teachers, which negatively impacted both individuals and the greater yoga community.

In 2020, the global yoga community faced a reckoning, highlighting issues like cultural misappropriation and insensitivity. Now, there is an opportunity to approach learning and sharing yoga responsibly, with a deeper understanding of its evolution, including the impacts of European colonialism on how yoga is perceived today. Our program is committed to honoring this responsibility by cultivating well-rounded, mindful, and culturally aware teachers.

Meghan Maris

A lifelong dedication to yoga philosophy & commitment to social justice.

I am an E-CYT and a graduate of Loyola Marymount University’s Master of Arts in Yoga Studies with a focus in Yoga Philosophy and social justice. Additionally, I am a candidate of the LMU’s post-graduate Yoga Therapy Certification.

During my time in the MA program, I completed the 100-hour Yoga, Mindfulness, and Social Change program as my work centers around integrating yoga practices and theory into lived experience to effectuate social change. I have been teaching postural yoga, yoga breath techniques, and Yoga Philosophy for twenty-five years.

I was initially trained through the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers and was a staff member of the London ashram from 2001-2004. During those years I lived, learned, and taught alongside my teachers and was steeped in all aspects of Vedic-rooted Yoga Philosophy and applications.

I teach Haṭha yoga, as well as Yoga Philosophy, integrating the physical and contemplative aspect of Yoga in classes, workshops, series, trainings, and retreats primarily in Portland, OR, as well as internationally. I offer private Yoga and Yoga Therapy sessions both in person and online.

My approach

Supportive and methodical grounded in decades of personal practice and teaching

As a “scholar-practitioner,” I aim to bridge the physical aspects of Yoga practices with its various philosophies, while providing historical context and clarification, to support the student to integrate the teachings into a lived experience bestowing wellbeing, cohesion, purpose, and meaning.

Through the devoted practice of yoga, the mind, body, and senses begin to steady and discriminative awareness is brought to the surface of the conscious mind. The practitioner can see that their actions are an expression of their consciousness which radically alters the way in which one engages with the world.

Through the consistent application of yoga’s ethics and philosophies, one’s ability to see themselves truthfully refines. One’s awakening awareness informs skillful action until there is no separation between the two just as the player of the instrument eventually transforms into the instrument itself.

Thus whatever role we may play in the world, we can engage in yoga as a practice to relinquish personal ownership and offer ourselves as instruments of awakened ethical action in the world.
